About Tashkent

The 56th Mendeleev International Olympiad will welcome 100 participants representing school pupils who were awarded prizes at national chemistry Olympiads in 16 different countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Nigeria, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The gala award ceremony held to recognize the winners of the Mendeleev International Olympiad in Chemistry for School Pupils will take place on May 15 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

56th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Tashkent is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, as well as the most populous city in Central Asia, with a population of more than 2,500,000. In 2018, was started to build a Tashkent city (new Downtown) which would include a new business district with skyscrapers of local and foreign companies, world hotels such as Hilton Tashkent Hotel, apartments, biggest malls, shops and other entertainments. Tashkent is the most visited city in the country, and has greatly benefited from increasing tourism as a result of reforms under president Shavkat Mirziyoyev and opening up by abolishing visas for visitors from the European Union and other developing countries or making visas easier for foreigners.

The Decree of the President “On additional measures to further improve the activities of presidential, creative and specialized schools” was adopted (No. PP-5188, 07/19/2021).

The Agency for the Development of Presidential, Creative and Specialized Schools was renamed the Agency of Presidential Educational Institutions.

The Decree approved the composition of the Board of Trustees of the Gifted Youth Support Fund under the Agency of Presidential Educational Institutions. Chairman of the Board of Trustees – President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Foundation for the Support of Gifted Youth under the Agency of Presidential Educational Institutions has been established.
The main tasks and directions of the Agency for Presidential Educational Institutions are:

– introduction into practice of assessing the knowledge and skills of students and teaching staff in STEAM subjects in accordance with the requirements of international (International Advanced Levels) programs, as well as issuing AS and A-LEVEL certificates of international level to them;

– connecting schools of the Agency’s system to the electronic information and library fund of the National Library named after A. Navoi and the funds of leading foreign information and library resources, creating opportunities for students to have wide access to these funds;

– teaching students of schools of the Agency’s system the skills of leadership, system analysis, creative and critical thinking, oratory, project management;

-introduction of the School Councilor program in Presidential schools, aimed at vocational guidance for students, assisting them in choosing higher educational institutions for further education;

Rules of IMChO

Schoolchildren of the final and pre-graduation classes of schools from among the winners of national chemical Olympiads take part in the Olympiad.

The International Mendeleev Olympiad consists of three rounds: the first theoretical (8 obligatory tasks of 10 points each), the second theoretical (5 tasks out of 15 at the choice of the participants, the maximum score for the task is 15 points) and the experimental round (estimated at 75 points). Online versions of the Olympiad (2020, 2021) were held without a practical tour.

The tasks of the first round in terms of complexity correspond to the program of specialized chemical classes. In the second round, higher-level problems are proposed, which are divided into five sections: inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and life sciences (3 problems in each section). Participants of the Olympiad must complete 5 tasks, one from each section, demonstrating the versatility of their training.

The experimental round of the Olympiad lasts 5 hours, it implies that schoolchildren have the skills to work in a chemical laboratory: the ability to perform chemical analysis of substances and carry out synthesis according to the proposed method. In just three rounds of the Olympiad, a participant can score a maximum of 230 points. Even for gifted students, this is not easy. The more deserved and significant is the victory in the International Mendeleev Olympiad.

About the Olympiad

International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad

The International Mendeleev Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Chemistry (IMChO) is one of the largest competitions for high school students, uniting the winners of national Olympiad tournaments from around the world. This is the only subject Olympiad that UNESCO equates in status with the International Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Chemistry.

The importance of the IMChO was also emphasized at the International Meeting on the Problems of Further Development of Chemistry Olympiads (Riga, Latvia, January 9-10, 2004), where it was noted as a good example of interregional cooperation that helps schoolchildren in the professional study of chemistry.

In 1992, the IMChO became the assignee of the All-Union Chemistry Olympiad for schoolchildren, retaining its numbering. In 1997, it took place outside of Russia for the first time. Since 2004, teams from Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania have been participating in the IMChO, and since 2012 Hungary, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have also joined the Olympiad. In 2016, for the first time, teams from Israel, Mongolia and Nigeria participated in the Olympiad. In 2019, 30 countries have already confirmed their participation in the IMChO, including Ukraine, Georgia, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Austria and China. In 2022, the national team of schoolchildren from Bangladesh will take part in the Olympiad for the first time.

According to international experts, the tasks of the International Mendeleev Olympiad are often more difficult and more interesting than the tasks of the International Chemistry Olympiad for schoolchildren. The IMChO has a number of significant differences from it and most of the national chemistry Olympiads. The main ones include the lack of a program and a preparatory set of tasks, in connection with which the participants must be well versed in various fields of chemistry. The tasks of the IMChO are prepared by a permanent methodological commission, which includes leading scientists and chemistry teachers representing the countries participating in the Olympiad. The official working languages of the IMChO are Russian and English. If desired, team leaders can translate assignments into their native language.

The International Mendeleev Olympiad has one more distinguishing feature - its methodological commission and jury, along with professors and teachers, always include students and graduate students - yesterday's winners of the Mendeleev Olympiads. This helps to preserve traditions and ensures continuity for years to come.

Since 2019, along with the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, co-organizers of the IMChO are the Andrey Melnichenko Charitable Foundation and the EuroChem company. In 2022, the Agency for Presidential Educational Institutions (Republic of Uzbekistan) acted as the host of IMChO-56.
